The GeneSight® Psychotropic test offers a glimpse into how your genes may affect medication outcomes. This genetic test provides insights that can guide our medication decisions, potentially reducing the trial and error often associated with finding the right medication. By understanding how a patient's genes may affect their response to medications, we can:
• Reduce the risk of unwanted side effects
• Tailor dosages to optimize therapeutic outcomes
• Provide medication management personalized uniquely for you
Our practice is committed to providing care that resonates with your unique needs. With tools like GeneSight®, we're enhancing our ability to offer treatments that are not just effective but also personalized to you. Each individual's response to medications for conditions such as depression, anxiety, or ADHD is influenced by their unique genetic makeup. At Sun Psychiatry, we understand that the journey to finding the right medication can be challenging – for instance, fewer than 50% of individuals with depression report feeling like the first medication they tried was truly effective.
The process is simple and painless. A quick cheek swab, either taken in our office or sent to your home, collects the DNA sample required for the test, which is then sent to the GeneSight® laboratory. The sample is subject to comprehensive analysis to determine how your genes might interact with various psychiatric medications.
Within just a few days, we receive a comprehensive report classifying over 60 mental health medications based on your genetic information, showing which medications may be more likely to be effective, as well as if there are any others that would be unwise to try given your body's ability to metabolize them effectively. This data is invaluable for making informed medication choices tailored just for you.
Fortunately, many insurance providers offer either total or partial coverage. Some of the ones we're aware of include:
CenCal (Medi-Cal): $0 out-of-pocket cost
Medicare (Part B): $0 out-of-pocket cost
Medicare Advantage: Patients may be expected to cover a portion of the cost
Medicaid: Typically, $0 out-of-pocket cost
For patients whose GeneSight® testing isn't covered by an insurance provider, the GeneSight® company offers a payment plan and financial assistance program. This programs help with the out-of-pocket costs associated with conducting the genetic analysis. Learn more about this program on their website.
If you have questions about whether GeneSight® testing is covered by your insurance in part or in full, we recommend contacting your plan's provider directly to give you personalized guidance.
